Design structures and design features characteristic of specialized suction cups

Specialized suction cups are a group of solutions designed to handle tasks and materials that go beyond standard applications (e.g., porous or oily surfaces, high temperatures, ultra-delicate products, cleanroom environments). They are used where it is necessary to adapt the geometry, material, and function (e.g., coatings, inserts, vacuum channels, controlled valves) to unusual process conditions.
  • Multi-cavity and segmentation — distribution of vacuum into zones to limit stress on delicate elements.
  • Bellows and thin-walled profiles — compensation for irregularities and fast response time (important in de-stacking and high-speed pick & place).
  • Internal reinforcements/supports — prevent deep drawing of thin sheets and deformations during transport.
  • Coatings and surface treatments — to reduce material “imprints,” prevent sticking, or limit the migration of compounds from the elastomer.
  • Integrated valves, vacuum sensors, and vacuum distribution channels — allow for grip control, monitoring the grip status, and shortening cycle times.

Materials and coatings — specialized vacuum suction cups

In specialized suction cups, specific elastomers and coatings are used, selected according to the medium and working conditions:
  • VMQ Silicone — flexible, temperature-resistant, and chemically neutral; often chosen for delicate surfaces and food applications.
  • NBR / HNBR — oil resistance and better mechanical strength; used with metal and oily components.
  • PU (polyurethane) — high abrasion resistance, good mechanical properties under intensive use.
  • FKM and fluorine compounds — where chemical and thermal resistance is required.
  • ESD / conductive materials — silicone compounds or rubbers with controlled resistance to protect circuits sensitive to electrostatic charges.
  • Surface coatings (e.g., DLC, “mark-free” coatings) — used to prevent leaving marks or material adhesion to the edge of the suction cup. Manufacturers offer surface modifications and anti-adhesive coatings.

How to select a vacuum suction cup for specific working conditions?

  1. Surface analysis (smooth / structural / porous / oily / coated).
  2. Evaluation of process requirements (temp., cycle speed, frequency, hygienic environment, ESD).
  3. Selection of material and geometry (e.g., silicone for delicate surfaces, NBR for oils, PU for abrasion).
  4. Prototype testing — it is worth using manufacturer tools and services for simulations and tests (companies offer configurators and 3D tests).
  5. Implementation with monitoring — using vacuum sensors or a grip maintenance analyzer minimizes the risk of failure.
